Song: "Sleeping In" by The Postal Service
May 17th
I did all sorts of sleeping in today. I got up crazy late. I then decided to go to Chatswood Mall and get some retail therapy in. I went to Borders and got When Harry Met Sally on Aussie DVD. Worth it, even though I can't take it home. I also bought the Dark Was The Night compilation, The Wedding Singer soundtrack and Kings of Leon's Aha Shake Heartbreak (definitely worth it). I also bought a pack of Australian sour patch straws and my tongue went completely numb eating them. Anything to procrastinate the lab report...
I'm also pretty sure I came home and watched When Harry Met Sally that night. Great stuff.

You and me and the devil makes three...
Song: "Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby"
May 13th
Grocery day. Oh yeah. Good stuff. Physics in the morning and then lab in the afternoon. Then I came home and went to the gym, and then speedily got ready to go see Cabaret with Shadé. Cabaret was insane, but awesome. Anna and a few other girls from surf camp were in it as dancers and then John was in it as every character ever, which I feel like is what he gets cast as often at Macquarie. Life is a cabaret, old chum.
As always, I had a blast with Shadé. She's one of my favorite Australians for sure and I'm going to miss her dearly when I leave.
I got back home in a reasonable hour and hoped to go out and do something, but yet again that didn't work out. Instead I stayed in and watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? with Sean. It was a good night. Sean fell asleep and went upstairs and I watched Lost. Honestly, I was having such a peaceful time watching the movie that I might have been ok with skipping Lost to finish it.

Something 'bout you caught my eye, something moved me deep inside
Song: "Ain't No Other Man (remix)" by Christina Aguilera
May 9th
I woke up in Bondi Junction and watched Disney's Alice in Wonderland and part of a Penguins vs. Capitals game. Great morning. Oh and I was still in my clothes from last night. As I sent thank you texts to my host on the way out the door, I wondered if it could still be called a "walk of shame" if nothing incredibly shameful happened. I decided it's pretty shameful that I was wearing the same outfit from last night, which looks fine in the evening and all, but not especially in the daylight. Regardless, I got home but not until about 2pm due to some lovely public transportation issues.
I decided I needed to go to Trafalgar to get salsa and god knows what else, and while talking with Justin online decided that I wanted to see Star Trek in IMAX in Darling Harbour. I'd walked past it last night in the course of the evening, and the idea was in my head, so I was going to see it. We tried to get more people to come with us, but weren't very successful, so the two of us went to see it around 7pm. I had heard earlier that people were going to Lowenbrau, the German pub in the rocks, and so had Justin, so we decided to meet them afterward.
The movie was mind-blowing. Oh, J.J. Abrams, I love you and everything you touch. Aside from the fairly blatant physics errors, the movie was incredibly entertaining. I knew enough about Star Trek (thanks to Dad) to know a bit about what was going on, so that was fun. The space fight scenes were brilliant in IMAX. Seeing Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine in IMAX wasn't so bad either...
Justin and I left the theater way before the rest of the folks from Macquarie made it into the city, so we went to KFC to kill some time and eat some dinner. The bathrooms were locked up due to vandalism, and there were a group of about 7 guys who came in wearing togas. So confused. Anyway, we left there and headed to Lowenbrau to wait for everyone else. Eventually they showed up, and we all danced and drank and had a good time. Oh and the bar above Lowenbrau is called Über Bar. Sweet, right?
Anyway, out of nowhere, Greg pulls me aside and asks if I want to go with him and Justin to Argyle. So we go. We stayed there for a bit, until we realized the bar was closed (not that I was buying anything there anyway, it's way too expensive) and headed back to go home.
We got back on the bus, and I wasn't sure if it went back to Culloden Rd. or not, so I convinced Justin to get off with me at Macquarie Centre and walk home from there. Greg stayed on the bus, which took him directly to Culloden, while Justin and I walked home freezing. Greg was right and I was cold.

I want more. Impossible to ignore...
Song: "Dreams" by The Cranberries
April 26th
4 am taxi rides suckkk. Not missing your flight, priceless.
We boarded our flight back home to Sydney with no problems. I slept a little on the flight, but not much. Luckily the iPod was at full battery capacity. I watched Yes Man on the flight. I saw it before with the family over break, but it was nice to watch again. It was also nice to listen to again knowing some of the music was by Eels.
We landed in Sydney, and caught a taxi back from the airport. We were dead tired. All I really remember is "Dreams" playing and me singing along, even in my exhausted state. I also remember that it was COLD compared to Cairns. I missed the tropics then. The driver told us it had been rainy and gross the last two weeks in Sydney. So at least we missed all that...
I got home and passed out. It was lovely. I had a lab report to do, but like most weekends, I waited to do it until later. I downloaded the "St. Valentine's Day" Episode of 30 Rock that I missed and watched that instead.

That is why we'll always make it...
Song: "My Favourite Book" by Stars
March 20th
Successfully made it to Optics, albeit not quite on time. With four people in the class I actually am starting to feel guilty about this, so I made a pact with myself to start being punctual. We'll see how that goes.
I wrapped up my homework and got it stapled at the library, then went with my homework to Physics. I was incredibly on time; I beat my professor to class. I must have really felt bad about being late to Optics this morning. I felt pretty confident about the assignment on the whole, and felt even better as soon as it was turned in. It always feels so nice to have the burden of an assignment of your back, until you remember the next one's due on the 31st. Blergh.
After class, I went back to my apartment. I went to the gym for the third of my tri-weekly trips there, then went home, cleaned up and ended up at 52: house of awesome. We had some wine(s) and I had absolutely nothing to do the next day, so I turned to Bernie, creator of excellent ideas, and asked what she was up to. We decided we were going to the zoo. We watched some rugby (I think it was rugby...) which I couldn't stay interested in, and then Christian and Alex, two of our Australian friends came over and wanted to see if anyone wanted to watch Friday the 13th (the new one, released this year on Feb 13th at home, and March 13th here). Christian had somehow gotten a hold of it. Now I normally hate scary movies. Really do. I flinch and cower and cringe and jump and generally do not enjoy watching them at all. However, with enough wine in me and a growing sense of ennui with that rugby game, I quickly agreed to join them. Alex is really cool; she's 17 and lives in the Gold Coast of Australia, which is far north of here. Christian is really cool too; he lives fairly far south of here around where our surf camp was. They were excellent company for this movie.
The movie had Jared Padalecki - or as Alex and I kept calling him, "Dean" (from Gilmore Girls) - and several other actors I didn't really care about. The plot isn't worth explaining here, but I do remember them playing "My Favorite Book" by Stars. I really like that song, and I've played it on my radio show back home for sure. This made me smile.
After the movie, which was fairly entertaining given my condition, we played some wrestling game on Christian's gaming console. I beat Alex, but Christian destroyed me. After awhile, Christian walked Alex and I home. It was definitely an enjoyable evening. Yes, it was an enjoyable evening involving a horror movie; I never thought I'd say that.

Very superstitious, nothing more to say...
Song: "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder
Friday, March 13th
I can't believe I've been in this country for a whole month now. I'm not sure how to explain the feeling that I have when I think about Australia. It's somewhere between never wanting to leave and wanting to leave immediately to see everyone I know across the globe. Moving to Australia for these few months has been amazing, but it's certainly a challenge to leave everyone you've ever known and just start over. However, the starting over has been incredibly entertaining thus far. :)
I had class in the morning, which was manageable, and then afterward I decided to go to the University Pool Party. It was rather lame, but I swam a little and bought a sausage from the W.A.N.G. club (We All Need Grub). I hung out at the gym a little longer and then went back to my apartment. It was empty for the first time since I can't remember when. Dimitra was out doing homework and Sean, Andy and Bethany were all at the Blue Mountains.
I realized I hadn't seen John in awhile and he now has a cell phone, so I asked if he wanted to come over. We watched this documentary on the beauty of the human body and then watched the Schlocky Horror Picture Show-ing of The Cold (or The Game). The Schlocky Horror Picture Show shows a horror movie from so long ago that it's just funny instead of being horrifying. My favorite part was when it looked like someone was going to be attacked and let out a piercing scream, but instead some guy just said "ouch." It was fun, but I had to get up early, so we never actually finished the movie. Seriously though, old horror movies are incredibly entertaining for their terrible acting and worse effects. John and I decided they should make more movies like this.
I had to sleep because Hilde and I were getting up early for the Sound Relief concert in Sydney. More on that next post!

For the loser now will be later to win...
Song: "The Times They Are A-Changin'" by Bob Dylan
March 5th
Thursday is my favorite day of the school week because, well, it's the day I have the least amount of school. I have optics in the morning for an hour and then I'm free. Optics class was in a different room than I was used to this morning, and I had a hard time finding it, but I got there alright. I had finished my homework the night before and was surprised to find that I got the problem correct when I turned it in. I felt pretty proud of myself.
Class was over early, and I went home and bought tickets for the Sound Relief concert festival in Sydney to raise money for the Victoria Brushfires. It's a really terrible mess down there, and if I can help people out and see Coldplay, Jet, Taylor Swift, The Presets, and more in the process, then I feel it's worthwhile. One of my friends here Hilde also wanted to come, so I got tickets for both of us and she paid me back. After that I got for my day at Bondi with Hayley from school back home. I Hayley's going to school in Sydney proper and lives on top of the Bondi Junction train station, where I met her Thursday afternoon.
I took the brand spanking new train from Macquarie Uni to Bondi Junction and it was a lot of fun. It's kind of like the Metro back home, with a double decker train instead of just one level. I sat on the lower level on the way there.
When I got to the Epping station (the end of the brand new train line that just opened), I had to buy a ticket to get into Sydney. Unfortunately, I had to do this while watching the train I wanted take off without me. I waited for 27 minutes to catch the next one. Alas, these things happen. Luckily for me, I am very good at maneuvering public transportation. I am not sure why I have this skill. Everyone always seems incredibly impressed with my ability to get from point A to point B. I guess I must have learned something back in D.C.
I'm pretty sure I just ate before I met up with Hayley, but we were both rather hungry and went to a little eatery for some grub. I got an orange juice and a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato. It was yummy. Hayley got some food and then finished it off with this delicious looking mud pie cake thing which I couldn't help her finish because of my new lenten sacrifice. *shakes fist at the heavens*
I haven't caved yet. I have dreams of caving and eating Tim-Tams or ice cream and then wake up feeling guilty even though I've done nothing. I'm hoping these go away soon. Hayley felt bad for tempting me, but I told her to not worry about it. It's just an exercise of my self-control.
We decided to head out from the restaurant to Bondi beach, knowing that it would be a hike. It may have been long, but it was a very interesting walk. We walked around Waverley Park, and saw the Waverley Oval (I think it's used for cricket matches).
All the little shops on Bondi Road were a lot of fun too:
We walked for a ways and then finally saw the ocean!
We also found Hunter Park which had some cool sculptures and other strange objects that apparently belong in parks. Hayley and I had fun with this.
From the park we walked down to the sandstone cliffs by the beach. We wanted to climb on them but the signs really seemed to insist that you stay on the path at all times.
So cool. We also found this place called the Bondi Icebergs Club, which had the coolest pool ever. It is right next to the ocean, and waves come and splash into it while you're swimming.
Hayley didn't bring a swimsuit so we spent awhile hunting for one for her. On the way we got to see the insides of a bunch of stores there, and their crazy mannequins with broken noses.
We did get to the beach and it was a gorgeous, breezy day.
We stayed for a bit on the sand and plotted to go see Watchmen in Sydney with Hayley's boyfriend. We left the beach and hustled back to Hayley's apartment in Bondi Junction. On the way I ate a kangaroo burger. It was delicious.
We met up with Ryan, Hayley's boyfriend near the Town Hall station (which I was familiar with, yay) and went to the movie.
Watchmen was amazing. I can't exactly describe it, but it was just phenomenal.
I had calculated that I would be cutting it close at the end of the night, but I didn't get around to calculating how close until the very end. The last bus out of the city back to Marsfield left at 12:10am. I left the theater at 12:01am. I left my seat around 11:55pm feeling incredibly anxious about missing the bus and watched the last few minutes from the back of the theater. I ran as fast as I could as soon as I saw the credits.
I bet it was amusing to watch a silly American girl sprinting across the streets of Sydney with her purple plaid backpack and black flip-flops, but I didn't really care at the time. I was just determined to not make this $14 movie into a $64 dollar one. (A cab ride back is about $50). I caught the bus and strangely enough saw Hilde, Vilde, Charlie, Karla and Austin, who all go to Macquarie with me. I believe most of them had been on a cruise in Sydney and were doing the same thing I was trying to get back.
