You and me and the devil makes three...

Song: "Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby"

May 13th

Grocery day. Oh yeah. Good stuff. Physics in the morning and then lab in the afternoon. Then I came home and went to the gym, and then speedily got ready to go see Cabaret with Shadé. Cabaret was insane, but awesome. Anna and a few other girls from surf camp were in it as dancers and then John was in it as every character ever, which I feel like is what he gets cast as often at Macquarie. Life is a cabaret, old chum.

As always, I had a blast with Shadé. She's one of my favorite Australians for sure and I'm going to miss her dearly when I leave.

I got back home in a reasonable hour and hoped to go out and do something, but yet again that didn't work out. Instead I stayed in and watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? with Sean. It was a good night. Sean fell asleep and went upstairs and I watched Lost. Honestly, I was having such a peaceful time watching the movie that I might have been ok with skipping Lost to finish it.

Our love is blowing all over the streets. You can hear it howling, listen...

Song: "Eastern Europe" by The Stills

May 6th

Physics class, grocery store, lab day, gym. Jay and I worked on homework briefly, until I ducked out to watch Lost.

I truly can't remember much else about today.

So screw California, and ice that will never melt...

Song: "California" by Rogue Wave

May 4th

Lab Report day. I was exhausted from procrastinating it until the early morning, per usual. I found out that I could in fact upload photos as long as it was before 8am. That didn't help productivity.

Optics went well. Rowan and I did yet another lab. Same as every week.

When I got home, I had a mysterious call from a number I didn't know, until I figured out it was Erin (who got a new number) who was over at Maeve's. Erin needed my help logging onto Blackboard to take an exam. My technical prowess didn't help her out, more my memory (remembering there was a number needed in the password that we set up months ago), but I was glad to help. Soon after that, I went to the gym and watched another episode of the new season of Scrubs.

Nadine and I magically got the internets working and talked to each other on Skype. Man I miss that kid. I caught her up on the happenings of my life, and she tried to catch me up on hers. Steph Glag was also on Skype briefly, which was lovely. Talking to those two made my day. I watched 30 Rock too. A good night all in all.

I don't care I'll burn out anyhow...

Song: "Incinerate" by Sonic Youth

April 29th

Wednesday morning. I was late to class, but this coupled with the fact that we have a new lecturer meant that we unexpectedly changed rooms this morning. So I went to the first classroom, and then was directed to walk across campus. Fabulous.

Lab went along well. It was our second week of the Zeeman effect lab, and we had essentially finished it in the first week, so we made a little magnetic field calibration curve and we were finished. We hung out around the computer until we felt like leaving. Made some graphs, you know.

I believe this evening was when I decided to take a killer nap after lab before the gym, and overslept. Luckily, there is a later class on Wednesdays so I took that instead. There were about seven other people in the class, so we went on to more advanced things and it was hard. There was a lot of pain, haha I mean "discomfort." Oh Pilates instructor Gayle, I will miss you and your witty ways. "Down with grace, elegance and dignity."

This was also the evening that Gayle taught us what figjam meant. I want to use that all the time.

I got home, briefly thought about working on my physics assignment, and then decided to watch Lost, which was essentially Ben-heavy and therefore ridiculously creepy. Then I slept and it was excellent.

Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed...

Song: "Ocean Breathes Salty" by Modest Mouse

April 27th

Monday. Lab report day. Day o' optics.

I went to class today, and then finished my lab - in true Becky fashion, minutes before it was due. I got to lab and I had no lab partner. :(

Rowan was out sick, so it was just me that day. The lab, while being relatively easy, still managed to take me a full three hours. This was likely because our lab facilitator truly enjoys experiments and getting them accomplished correctly, even if that means suggesting improvements to the lab manual as the experiment is going on. Basically, I saw how heat (even so little as the amount from my hand when placed close to the fiber) affects optical fibers of certain kinds. It's also affected by temperature, but I'll save you the details. Anyway, that went well.

I had my first day back at the gym. I watched an episode of 30 Rock at its regularly scheduled time. Then I slept. Today made me want to jump out of planes again.

Go on, pull up, I know it's tough...

Song: "Raise the Dead" by Phantom Planet

March 27th

Note: I specifically chose this song for the title because while I was writing my lab report Friday morning I was thinking of the song "Do The Panic" also by Phantom Planet on the same album, but decided that "doing the panic" was not helpful for lab report writing. This song got me pumped for lab report writing.

Today I believe was the day when Alex, our optics lecturer, couldn't make it to class, and so we instead got to tour one of the optics labs on campus. It was neat and I enjoyed it.

Today's entry is notably boring. I finished the lab report and turned it in at 2pm, two hours before it was due because I was sick of looking at it. Shaheen's was much nicer and prettier than mine, but by today, I didn't have enough time to care. "Noise" sounds like such a simple lab report by the title, but it was incredibly difficult. Boo.

Anyway, I finally finished up, took a nap, went to the gym and ran into Vilde and Amy in class. They were both going to the V Festival tomorrow so we all figured out when we were leaving. I went home and did nothing all night in preparation for my big day at V Fest Saturday. Most of my roommates went to surf camp for the weekend, so Dimitra and I had the house to ourselves. She invited me out for drinks, but I needed to catch up on some serious sleep.

I just can't describe it, oh no no...

Song: "Finally" by CeCe Peniston

March 2nd

Ugh, this morning was awful. I finished my optics lab report before class, ran over to the Village center to get it printed; there were too many people in line so I ran to class, ran back to the village printing center, ran back to lab, turned it in. Yuck.

In between I tried to stop by the Macquarie Musical Society's picnic, but I wasn't sure what was going on. I feel like it was a group gathering with MacMS and the drama group and possibly the improv group. Either way, I had to go to my lab so I left after peeking my head in. I got wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce instead to kill some time, which I had because I am very productive while running around with my head cut off.

Lab was entertaining. We shot lasers into mirror like things and took recordings. We also broke the device and had to start over. Whee!

After lab, I went home. On the way, John scared me while walking to my apartment. My current state of sleep deprivation did not help, but it definitely worked. :)

I then went to the gym. Some remix of CeCe Peniston's "Finally" was on when I was running and it for some reason has been following me around this week.

On a side note, I am seriously convinced there is a higher power responsible for my music listening habits, either on shuffle on my iPod or songs on the radio or at the mall or on TV. I'm also convinced that there is a demon in my iPod that won't let me select the proper song for On-The-Go playlists, but that's for another time. I could talk for several hours about this, so let me know if you're interested some other time.

Also, my roommate Sean received the guitar he ordered today. This was amazing. I miss my guitar so much. He let me play it and it was probably the best part of my day.

My heart's in overdrive and you're behind the steering wheel...

Song: "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" by The Darkness

February 25th
Ash Wednesday

First of all, I decided to give up sweets for Lent, excepting one biscuit at mid-lab tea time at each lab each week. So I get two butter cookies a week.

I am not even going to try to express the longing I have for every ice cream bar, bag of Tim Tam cookies, and giant chocolate Easter egg that seems to fill aisle after aisle at the grocery store.

I'm trying something different to see if I can do it, so why not try it here, where almost everything is something different?

On another note, the song was stuck in my head from the night before at Scruffy Murphy's. I could not get it out of my head all day.

Anyway, today started off with more Physics, which was more review (again, I cannot thank you enough professor). I had a fairly large break in between class and my first Physics lab, so I decided to go to Macquarie Centre to get school supplies and hair ties. (I remembered this shopping list because it rhymed.) On my way, I ran into Justin, one of my new friends here, and we went shopping for quite a while looking for a fan of any kind. We never found it, but we had fun on the way. We explored The Rejects Shop (kind of like an expensive dollar store) and it was definitely full of rejects. We tried Big W (the Australian Wal-Mart), Myer (the Australian Sears), and Target (the Australian Target), all with no luck. Stupid Australian stores don't restock quite as fast as America. Anyway, Justin and I ate lunch, then headed back. Along the way we met a girl who was lost and looking for the Village, which was conveniently where we were headed. She was very nice, and since I had to go to the Administration building anyway, I walked with her.

I'm not sure how I went shopping for two hours, but regardless I got to lab on time, and met my lab partner Shaheen. She was so helpful. I have no idea how physics labs work here and she really cleared up some of the muddy spots for me. We were on the noise lab and were playing with EM noise in a circuit system. Pretty fun. Luckily the lab reports for this class are due every three weeks instead of every week like optics.

After lab, I went to the gym, and after the gym, I went to do laundry, where I ran into Justin again. Turns out I didn't have quite enough change, so I went to the Trafalgar Square store (the local convenience store) to get some change. I may not have mentioned this by now, but I was carrying my laundry around in my suitcase, and the lady at the store asked me if I was moving out. I laughed. I am looking into a better system for transporting dirty clothes to the laundry as we speak. Over the course of the laundry evening I ran into Julie, Lauren and Lindsay, and a few other people I didn't know at the laundry place. It was a very productive night.

You say it's your birthday. It's my birthday too, yeah.

Song: "Birthday" by The Beatles

February 18th

One of the marvelous things about birthdays while studying abroad in Australia is that you can milk them for about 16 hours more than they should be. I turned 21 today, sort of, and therefore proceeded to party like it.

hahahaha, I went to the shopping center by myself and bought a fan.

I also bought myself two CDs (Ladyhawke and a two-disc Bushfire Aid compilation, if you're curious) but the fan was crucial. I hauled that thing back from the store in incredibly hot weather and it was completely worth it.

When I got back, Matt was on the radio and asked me for a birthday request. "Sex on Fire" was my request because it has been so prominent in my life here recently. While listening, I danced like a fool in my room. It might have been my favorite part of the day. He also played a Ladyhawke song for me too. Seriously Matt, thanks a lot.

After all this, I went to the gym. I am a party animal.

When I returned, I showered and then quickly rushed off to The Ranch, which is officially my least favorite bar we've been to since I've been here. Again, "Sex on Fire" was played, this time being slowed down to an unbearable tempo. Good grief.

I ran into half of surf camp which was fun, and Sean bought me a drink, along with Tara and Liz. They tried really hard to make it a fun night for me and I really appreciated it. We left in this shuttle back to the Village which was way too full, but I also appreciated not having to walk, although the fresh air might have been nice. Orientation was the next morning so I went to bed as soon as I got back.

Uneventful Entry #1

February 16th

I was going to go to the Taronga Zoo today but I overslept. I'm still upset about it.

A bunch of people, myself included, went to get gym memberships and then met up with a bunch of people from the AustraLearn crew at the mall, where we proceeded to buy many things. I brought a backpack and felt very smart for doing so.

Not much else happened today.

I did go to the gym and at their fitness area with the running machines I watched an entire episode of How I Met Your Mother on mute. Sarah Chalke from Scrubs was guest starring, and I think there was a wedding that was supposed to go on which didn't. I realized a few days later that you can watch it with sound if you bring headphones. Silly me.
