Song: "Nothing Ever Happened" by Deerhunter
March 25th
Class happened. Then, instead of weekly grocery shopping, I went to the science computer lab to get things done. And by "get things done" I mean, look into spring break.
I then made my way to the optics seminar. It was really fun. The speaker was from the University of Sydney and spoke on the environmental impact of the internet and how optics can, in theory, make this impact smaller. It was an interesting talk. There was also some delicious pizza. Most everything had pineapple and chicken on it, which I love, and there was that delicious passion fruit soda. I met one of the postgrads there and we talked about his research and I tried to tell him all I could remember about my optics experience (yeah, the three weeks of it I had). It was interesting trying to hold my own in comprehending what was going on. This is the one of the parts I enjoy about physics. Also, the guy who has been convincing us to go to this for weeks now didn't know I was American, so that was kind of cool. Either I say my name in a non-accented way, or I'm blending in well.
After that, I had some spare time until physics lab, where Shaheen and I took on the rest of the semi-conductor experiment. We get to play with dry ice next week! Shaheen was incredibly sleep-deprived from all the work she was doing this week, which made me feel bad about how little I had started on our draft lab report that was due Friday. Shaheen + sleep-deprived = incredibly entertaining. Also, we found out from Gina that we had to have copies of our lab book turned in with the lab. The lab book that Ewa had told us we needed to redo. Upon hearing this information, I was in a state of panic to say the least, but I made up my mind that I was way past panicking and needed to just get stuff done.
Knowing my "tendencies" when it comes to doing assignments, I had decided earlier in the week that I wasn't going to go on the 70's Love Boat cruise this evening with everyone else I know in The Village and instead that I was going to stay home and get stuff done. I hate making decisions like this, but I knew I had to. When I got home, I productively procrastinated the lab report due Friday by typing up some of the semi-conductor lab data from this week for Shaheen. (We put all the data in my book instead of copying it twice during the actual lab; we needed as many hands as possible.)
I worked on the lab, but not as much as I probably should have. And then I watched Lost (the episode from Feb. 25th in the states). I only missed one episode total while I was gone, which worked out better than I expected.

With my freeze-ray I will stop the world...
Song: "Freeze-Ray" from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog
March 1st
I had really planned to go to the beach today, but it was a giant inner debate. Maybe the title song should have been "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash.
Anyway, I was so excited by Nicole figuring out Skype (yay!) that I kind of missed the group exodus from my house to the train to the beach. Yay also for tough decisions being made for me!
After talking, sort of, with Nicole for a bit and catching up on details from my Maryland life that I've been missing out on, I got down to business. When I say got down to business, I mean that I started procrastinating working on my lab report that was due the next day.
The first thing I did after finding out I wasn't going to the beach was go back to sleep. I swear, another weekend I will do more interesting things. Then when I got up, I realized I hadn't yet missed the audition times for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog for the Macquarie Musical Society. So I watched said show on YouTube all the way through again, and reviewed a few songs to audition on until I was ready, or at least ready enough.
Note: you can watch the musical/internet phenomenon on here on Hulu (U.S. only) or YouTube there and elsewhere around the world, at least I believe. Make sure you watch all 6 parts on YouTube. For those of you who are fans of the show and also musicians who like sheet music (like me), you can find that here.
Anyway, I found the audition room, and while sitting outside, my friend John came out of the audition room. Running into people unexpectedly is always fun. I practiced in the hall with a very nice girl who swore repeatedly that I was going to get the part. This made me smile and laugh a little on the inside. She was a little down on herself because she wasn't solid on the song, but I'm not sure why. She sounded just fine to me. I hadn't auditioned for a musical since senior year of high school, so it had definitely been awhile. Luckily, this is not a musical with dancing. I sang the songs the best I could, read lines in the only way I know how, and had a generally great time avoiding that lab report. The director, producer and keyboardist were a lot of fun and I felt strangely comfortable auditioning in front of them.
I went back to the village with another girl who had auditioned who was originally from China. She was really nice and there's a decent chance I've met her before, but I still don't know her name. It's terrible really.
I got back to the apartment, worked on the dreaded lab report for a bit, and then got a call from Tara to see if I wanted to grab some free food from the administration building. I happily agreed to tag along. We got our free sausage, and Tara also grabbed a veggie burger. (I'm sure I mentioned this, but I still can't get over the actual vegetables in the patty. Like, there are whole peas and slices of carrot.) I told Tara I was running out of orange juice and that I was thinking about going to the store. Luckily, when we got a hold of Maeve, she told us the nearby store was closing in 5 minutes. We ran across the street (safely and looking both ways...) and dashed in to grab some last minute groceries. We met up with Maeve and another section of the beach crew, who all felt really bad about accidentally leaving me behind when they left for the beach. I tried to assure them that everything worked out for the best, but they still felt terrible.
Anyway, I didn't have much time to care because I was too busy fretting over this lab report. I eventually finished, working until too late in the evening. I slept for a few hours before waking up early to finish it, but I'll tell you all about it in tomorrow's entry.
